Intervals of Possibility

There has not been a more challenging time for most of us, as we globally face economic, personal, organizational and societal disruptions unlike anything we have ever experienced. In many ways this is the ultimate shared experience, while at the same time being extremely individual. Each of us has been uniquely impacted, and uncertainty is often the theme of any Blursday.

I recently listened to a TEDx talk by Caroline McHugh from 2013, with a message that resonates soundly for today, it is simply, timeless goodness. In this she speaks about how when we are impacted by something entirely out of our control impacts us, we have an Interval of Possibility.

Moments, blips, how to make the most of our time, and possibilities. We are truly at a time where we can go in one directon or another, and much of this will come down to an attitude of willingness to be vulnerable, appreciating you are not alone in this. To ask for help when the days feel bleak, where we are struck by an unexpected sadness or depression. Consider what you can give and how much more you will receive in the act of unconditionally offering support, a suggestion or a smile to those who need it. Social connection, and connection to our community are critical to our wellbeing as humans. When this is ripped out from under our daily lives we do need to make the effort to keep our connections active, for our own health. Making the effort to make a call, answer a text, join (another) virtual ‘happy hour’ on any medium can sometimes feel daunting, and inertia easily leads us to our couch, so put on our big kid pants (no zippers is a-ok) and make the effort, you will feel better.

What else could you do or would you like to do – that can be done within the confines you have. We see people picking up old hobbies, and learning new ones. Taking advantage of the endless education offered by all our industry associations and many colleges, universities and independant learning agencies. Turning yards into gyms, and neglected beds into gardens. Moving stationary bikes onto patios and bikes onto trails and picking up instruments, sometimes long neglected. Baking (endlessly), cooking, learning to cook or bake, reading, writing, running, and learning a lot more about those they live with. Averting boredom, inspiring teens to do, well ANYTHING, entertaining children and discovering that cleaning up after a baking soda volcano is easier without the food coloring added to it. The fun is real. It is YOUR Interval of Possibility – what will you do with it?
